Can Extra Protein Help You Lose Weight? | Nutrition
While there are drawbacks to a high-protein diet, just like we discussed in a previous article, there are benefits, too! It appears that adding extra protein to your diet can help you lose weight. However, it’s effective and safe for only a certain number of months.
According to assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard University School of Public Health (Boston, Massachusetts), Dr. Frank Hu, high-protein diets can increase fat burning in the body and satiety (or that sense of being "satisfied" or "full" after a meal), and decrease calorie intake by the body, which all leads to weight loss.
How does this happen?
Dr. Hu further explained that the body can convert protein into glucose for energy. The body however, in order to do this, needs twice as much effort as converting fats or carbohydrates into glucose. This extra effort decreases the calorie available.
On average, according to Dr. Hu, a high-protein diet can help you lose an average weight loss that is 4.5 lbs greater than what you can achieve with other diets – but only after six months or within that period. After that, high-protein diets lose their effectiveness or they can’t help you maintain the weight you lost. This means that it’s great to use it to lose weight, but not to maintain weight.
What You Can Do
It’s a bit tricky to just follow your guts when it comes to losing and maintaining your weight using a high-protein diet. Your best bet is to seek the help of a professional nutritionist who can help you better understand the proper intake of protein and protein supplements.
At Aussie Supps Nutrition Hub, we have an in-house qualified nutritionist that can provide you with a healthy diet plan that's personalized to your body and goals.
We use the principle of calories for all our meal plans, with some clients tracking, but most clients using simple serving sizes instead! Meaning you get to pick and choose foods you like and enjoy, but without having to track it all every day!
Remember, if your goal is to lose weight, your health matters more than a number on a scale. It's always important to maintain a holistic approach to weight loss. It should also include physical activity, stress management, quality sleep, and other important factors, such as hormones and medical issues.
